Introduction

Jake Haiwhagai’i Edwards and Dr. Philip P. Arnold examine the ecological and cultural consequences of the Erie Canal for Haudenosaunee peoples. Water is sacred in Haudenosaunee cosmology; canal construction re-engineered watersheds, damaged relationships to place, and contributed to long-term trauma.
